Stanushina
Stanušina: the hidden gem of Macedonia

Character and flavour profile
Stanušina wines are light in colour but rich in aromas, with notes of strawberry, raspberry, blackcurrant and sometimes cornelian cherry. They have fresh acidity and soft tannins, giving an elegant and refreshing taste. The grape is versatile and is used to make red, rosé and even white wines.
Sustainability and cultivation
The Stanušina vine is highly resistant to drought and pests, and requires no additional irrigation. The grape ripens late in the season and yields an average of 15-20 tonnes per hectare. The juice contains around 18-20% sugar and 6-9 g/L acids, resulting in wines with an alcohol content of 11-12%.
Food pairings
Stanušina wines go beautifully with white and yellow cheeses, light and creamy desserts, leafy salads, nuts and sweets. Their fresh acidity and fruity aromas also make them a good match for dishes such as sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls) and stuffed peppers.
Preservation and recognition
With the introduction of international grape varieties, the area planted with Stanušina has declined sharply in recent years, threatening the survival of this local variety. Local wineries, however, have launched initiatives to reintroduce this unique old Macedonian grape to the region.
