My name is Trajko Mitkov. My father is Macedonian, my mother Dutch. Those two countries come together in what I do.
Why Macedonian wine?
In the summer of 2014 I made a discovery that people in Macedonia have known about for centuries: wine. Not just any wine — wines that show the character of the country in their own headstrong way. Full, warm, with a voice of their own.
And then came the question that has stayed with me ever since: why does almost nobody in the Netherlands know these wines?
Macedonia has a wine history of more than four thousand years. Vines that old have been found there. The country lies on the same latitude as the Côtes du Rhône, Rioja and Tuscany — the same climate zone, the same sun. Wine is the country's second-largest export product. And yet Macedonia is one of Europe's last undiscovered wine countries.
That is not because the wine is not good. It is because nobody tells the story.
What we care about
Our goal is simple: to make Macedonian wine accessible to wine lovers in the Netherlands. For two reasons:
For those who do not know it yet. A whole wine country is waiting for you, with grape varieties you will find nowhere else. Vranec, that deep, powerful red. Temjanika, floral and surprisingly fresh. Kratosija, a relative of Primitivo but with a character of its own. These are not copies of French wines — these are wines with an identity of their own.
For those who already know it. Are you Macedonian, or have you been there and learned to appreciate the wine? Then you know how hard it is to find these wines in the Netherlands. That is what Wijnhandel Alexander is for. The widest range of Macedonian wine in the Netherlands, delivered straight to your door.
What you will find with us
We work with wineries including Tikveš, Chateau Kamnik, Stobi, Bovin, Dalvina, Lazar, Brzanov and Traikovsky. From large, renowned houses to small artisan winemakers.
You will also find rakija with us — the traditional Macedonian grape brandy — and a selection of Macedonian delicacies.
Every bottle we sell, we have tasted ourselves. We sell nothing we do not stand behind.
